Writing and Telling Stories

Writing stories is for me a sporadic activity. Years sometimes pass and then images begin to bubble up and out. The experience of living for a long time in some far corner will mysteriously find its way into story. These stories are all true and from my own life… Of course now and then the facts must be slightly adjusted to allow the truth to shine forth.

Storytelling is, on the other hand, a way of life in all senses of the word. I’m sometimes asked when I began to tell stories and I used to say, “When crossing borders.” (It’s always good to have a believable story for immigration and customs officials.) But really, like each of us, I began telling stories at the dawn of the world, before there was time… We all awake to the profound mystery of our own existence and our consciousness of that existence. Then, little by little, we begin to tell stories to ourselves and to others in our call to make sense of what we’re experiencing. What a wonder-filled process.
